Job Responsibilities:

  • Duties listed are at the full performance GS-09 grade level.
  • Supervises a group of employees performing work at the GS-05 through GS-08 level.
  • Performs the administrative and human resource management functions relative to the staff supervised.
  • Formulates and develops plans, contract specifications, and schedules for well-precedent fire management operations.
  • Serves as cargo dropper in charge of aerial delivery missions in a variety of aircraft.
  • Trains and checks performance of spotter trainees, makes critical safety decisions and fire strategies and tactics.
  • Serves, as assigned to assist and/or manage special programs such as Operations Manager, Smokejumper Safety and Prescribed Fire Treatments.
  • Directly supervises smokejumper squads which include Spotters, Squad Leaders and Smokejumpers.

Job Requirements:

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service or exempt.
  • Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check.
  • Successful completion of one-year probationary period, unless previously served.
  • Per Public Law 104-134 all Federal employees are required to have federal payments made by direct deposit to their financial institution.

  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • This is a Test Designated Position. You will be tested for illegal drugs prior to appointment and randomly thereafter. Appointment and continued employment is conditional on negative results.
  • Must pass the Work Capacity Test for certain Interagency Fire Program Management or Fire Program Management positions.
  • Subject to one year supervisory/managerial probationary period unless prior service is creditable. New USDA supervisors must successfully complete all components of the required training program before the end of their probationary period.

Qualification & Experience:

  • For the GS-08: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level. Examples of specialized experience include: Performing as an Initial Attack Commander responsible for leading a squad of personnel in wildland suppression activities. Directing and coordinating all types of related aircraft, fireline personnel and equipment.
  • For the GS-09: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-8 level. Examples of specialized experience include: Serving as spotter and making critical safety decisions on jump actions and fire strategies and tactics.
