Job Description:

Under the supervision of the Director of Human Resources, the Diversity Recruitment Officer (DRO) will manage, implement, collect data and report on the outreach and recruitment process for the position of Fire Fighter on a continuous and sustained basis. The DRO will also conduct outreach and recruitment efforts for other Department positions as required.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Network with veterans and other organizations to aid recruiting efforts for the BFD
  • Develops and maintains relationships with and acts as the BFD liaison to local community groups, schools, military and veteran groups locally and nationally, and any other potential recruitment institutions or organizations, as well as with various city, state and federal agencies, such as Civil Service, through outreach and networking efforts.
  • Assists the BFD Human Resources Department on outreach and recruitment efforts for other BFD positions as may be required
  • Identify, coordinate and represent the BFD at all outreach, recruitment and networking events to recruit firefighter candidates for employment with the BFD
  • Responsible for all of the administrative and logistical tasks related to the Boston Fire Department Teen Academy and other recruitment efforts and programs.
  • Develops a targeted recruitment strategy and implements this plan to assist the BFD in executing initiatives to achieve the Department’s diversity and inclusion goals
  • Develop, maintain and manage social media platforms for BFD’s informational, outreach and recruitment efforts and programs

Job Requirements:

  • Familiarity with Human Resources practices and procedures
  • Knowledge of and experience in Veteran’s affairs, issues and activities
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required
  • Must have a valid Massachusetts Driver’s License and the ability to drive
  • Ability to interpret policies and guidelines for program execution
  • Must be familiar with Massachusetts Civil Service Laws, procedures and practices and court rulings related to diversity hiring practices of the department
  • Successful track record of advocacy for Veterans.
  • Must be flexible to perform related duties as required
  • Knowledge of current literature, federal, state and local laws and regulations, and court rulings and administrative agency decisions related to employment practices of public safety agencies
  • Must be available for evening and/or weekend events as may be required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications

Qualification & Experience:

  • Excellent Communication Skills – Must be able to effectively express ideas both orally and in writing with strong presentation techniques
  • Recruitment and marketing experience
  • At least four (4) years of full-time or equivalent part-time professional work experience promoting workplace diversity initiatives and programs.
